I love the smell of burning resistors in the morning
Actually I don't (it's a foul smell, and probably toxic). But I got to smell it few times today. As I mentioned in a comment on the last post, I'm testing airfield lighting regulators (or constant current regulators - CCRs) at the moment. The one I did today had a wiring fault in it that took a little while to find, so in the process I burned out a number of resistors. You get a nice little plume of smoke as they fry...hehe
I managed to finish all the main tests today, and it's doing a full load (10kW) heat run overnight tonight, and I'll have to go in tomorrow and take some thermal photos of it and then turn it off.

Ugh! Don't you hate that smell? I remember having to burn resistors in Technology classes in school. Awful smell. And I was always paranoid I'd slip and burn a huge hole in my leg or arm.
how would you slip? the resistors are soldered onto a circuit board.
Haha Rob! I laughed so much at your opening sentence! Hopefully it didn't cause any long term damage! I think I'd be too scared to deal with that much power.
Hehe...10kW is nothing for us. Even a 30kW unit is a baby as far as we're concerned (for UPSs anyway). I think the biggest CCR we do is 30kW. And with the way they work, at 30kW the output voltage is about 4,545 volts.
The serious stuff is up around the 600 - 800kW mark (even up to 1.2MW). Although we don't get orders for jobs that size very often.
As far as the resistors, no long term damage. The resistors themselves are less than 1c each, and about 3mm long. Pretty minor. Although it's amazing how much stink one tiny resistor can make.
I meant burtning myself with the iron, Rob. :P
ah, ok. Just the way you said you remember "having to burn resistors" confused me. What were you doing? Trying to blow them up? That's what I was talking about. The resistors in the CCR were smoking without a soldering iron. They were burning out.
Yeah, i assume he meant the iron, otherwise that's just weird.
